Professor
Charalambous, founder of the Cyprus Community Studies Centre, is a
Chartered Chemist and a Fellow of the Royal Chemical Society. He
graduated from the Pancyprian Gymnasium (Nicosia, Cyprus) in 1954 and
then studied at the University of London from where he received the
BSc(Hons)in Chemistry in 1959 and a PhD degree in 1962.
Following
postdoctoral studies at the Universities of Western Ontario (Canada) and
Wahenigen (Netherlands) he was appointed as Senior Research Officer at
the Cyprus Agricultural Research Institute. He joined the University of
North London (formerly Northern/North London Polytechnic) in 1966.
Throughout his
career at the University he has been closely associated with the
University’s international activities in Cyprus, Germany, Hungary,
Greece, Italy, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. These encompass student
counseling, recruitment and research student supervision. Cyprus and
Greece related activities also include the organization of conferences,
exhibitions and the publication of books and research concerned with the
Cypriot community in the UK.
His research
interests are concerned with metal complexes and their applications in
industry, medicine and synthesis. This has lead to over 60 papers, books
and patents. He has successfully supervised over 50 research students
for both PhD and MPhil degrees and is currently supervising 5 PhD
students. |
