Born
in Limassol (1932). Graduated of the Pangyprian Gymnasium Nicosia
(1950), B.Sc degree in Physics and M.Sc in Electronics (1957)
University of Athens, Ph.D. in Computer Science (1961)
University of Manchester.
Worked as teacher of Physics at the Pangyprian Gymnasium Nicosia (1957 –
59), Head of the Electrical Engineering Section of the Limassol
Technical School (1962 – 63), Research Scientist at the Dimocritos
National Research Centre, Athens (1963 – 75), Professor of Computer
Science at the University of Athens (1975 - 2000), Professor Emeritus of
the University of Athens (2000 – today).
Served as Vice – Rector of Economic Planning and Development of the
University of Athens(1982 – 85, 1988 – 1994 and 1998 – 2000), Dean of
the Faculty of Science of the University of Athens (1985 – 88), Head of
the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University
of Athens(1989 – 94, 1997 – 99).
Acted as Vice – chairman of the Preparatory and Interim Governing Board
of the University of Cyprus, Vice - Chairman of the Governing Board of
the University of Peloponnese (2001 – 2004), member of the Preparatory
Committee of the Technological University of Cyprus (2002 – 2003), Vice
– Chairman of the Open University of Cyprus (2003 – to-day).
Acted as Vice Chairman of the Governing Board of the “Onassis
Cardiosurgical Centre” and the “Atticon Hospital” and as Chairman of
the Governing Board of the “Evgenidion University Hospital” (Athens). He
also acted as advisor to the Governments of Greece and Cyprus on Data
Processing.
Has
published many articles in scientific journals and the proceedings of
International Conferences on various subjects such as Computer
Architecture, Computer Networks, Error Detection and Correction Codes,
Parallel Computing, Natural Language Processing, Educational and
Distance Learning Software, and has taught a variety of lessons in
Computer Science and Engineering for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate
students of the University of Athens.
Many
of his Ph.D students are to-day University professors in Greece and
aboard. |
