Professor Elpida Keravnou-Papailiou

University of Cyprus

Elpida Keravnou-Papailiou is Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Cyprus (since 1996) and Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs. Previously she was the Dean of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences (1999-2002) and the first Chairperson of the Department of Computer Science (1994-1998) of the University of Cyprus. She received a B.Tech. (first class honors) in Computer Science from Brunel University, UK (1982) and a Ph.D. in Cybernetics from the same University (1985).  She taught in the Department of Computer Science of University College London (1985-1992). She is Associate Editor of the scientific journal Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (Elsevier) and a member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal Systems Research and Information Science (Gordon and Breach).

She has carried out research in the areas of knowledge engineering, expert systems, deep knowledge models, diagnostic reasoning, temporal reasoning, artificial intelligence in medicine, and hybrid decision support systems.

In addition to her publications in scientific journals, conference proceedings and book chapters she has co-authored (with Professor L. Johnson) three books (Expert Systems Technology: a guide, Abacus Press, 1985, Competent Expert Systems: a case study in fault diagnosis, Kogan, 1986, and Expert Systems Architectures, Kogan, 1988), she has edited a book volume on Deep Models for Medical Knowledge Engineering (Elsevier, 1992), and has co-edited (with Drs N.Lavrac and B.Zupan) a book volume on Intelligent Data Analysis in Medicine and Pharmacology (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1997).  Recently she authored a book on Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems  for the Greek Open University.  Recently she has completed a new book (co-authored) with C. Combi (Universita' degli Studi di Verona, Italy) and Y. Shahar (Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel) titled Temporal Information Systems in Medicine, to be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers.

She was the Program Committee Chair of the 6th Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Europe (France, Grenoble 1997), and the Co-Chair of two International Workshops on Intelligence Data Analysis in Medicine and Pharmacology (IDAMAP-96 organized under ECAI-96 and IDAPAM-97 organized under IJCAI-97). She has served as member of the Program Committees of various International Conferences. She served as the Organizing Committee Chair for the 9 th Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Europe (AIME 2003), which was hosted in Cyprus in October 2003.  The period 2003-2005 she served as Chairperson of the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Europe (AIME) Board.

She is the Chairperson of the Cyprus Council for the Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications (KY.S.A.T.S.), a member of the Council for the Educational Evaluation and Accreditation (S.EK.A.P), a member of the Governing Board of the Cyprus Foundation for National Scholarships (I.K.Y.K), a member of the Specialist Committee for Educational Reforms and participated in the Recommendation Committee for the Open University of Cyprus.  Furthermore she is a member of an ad hoc Committee for the preparation of a proposal regarding the establishment of a Centre for Research and Evaluation in Education and the reformation of the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus.

In the context of her responsibilities as Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, she coordinates the implementation of the Bologna reforms at the University of Cyprus and she presents Cyprus in the Program Committee for Erasmus Mundus. She is also a member of the “Bologna Promoters” for Cyprus.
